The Social Lounge host ‘Two Nights Only’
The Social Lounge held their 4th variety performance night at Middleton Arena. Their ‘One Night Only’ show had to be hastily renamed to ‘
One Two Nights Only’ due to a tremendous demand for tickets – both nights were sold out! The Social Lounge is held at The Cherwell Social Education Centre in Heywood and the people who use it help to run it. Rochdale Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, Councillor Robert Clegg said: “This is a major boost for people with learning disabilities and their families as we continue to develop a range of flexible, accessible services that are attractive, welcoming and build on the support local community services offer.”
The performance group was open to individuals who lack a little self esteem and confidence or some that wouldn’t normally partake in such an activity. Each year expectations are exceeded by the individuals and as you can see from the photographs, they relish in the tasks they set themselves. Staff manager Colette Crookes said ‘We try and involve everyone who can play a part and this involves people from a wide spectrum of our society. We have been rehearsing for 8 months and the dedication of the acts shone through in their performances. It is non profit show and all money raised has to pay for costumes and room hire. The show helps to give a sense of belief and pride and acknowledgement for individuals to achieve.’
Some of the acts included Lady Gaga, a Queen tribute, a superb rendition of Eye of the tiger, One Direction, of course Elvis was here too and a treat for the ladies was the boys trying their hand at ‘The Full Monty’ as a show-stopper! All the acts made a curtain call for the finale which was appreciated by the 300 strong audience, with a standing ovation which lasted for many encores. A special thanks go to Middleton Select Boxing Club for helping out and encouraging the view that the Social Lounge is committed to help communities to break down any barriers regarding learning difficulties.
The good news is that it will all happen again on 27th April 2013 at the Middleton Arena. Tickets are £6 for adults and £4 for children.
